The city of Aachen relies on DSD speed displays

Protect Life, Road safety

Increasing road safety at primary schools - the city of Aachen relies on DSD speed displays.

The city of Aachen has taken major steps in recent years to improve road safety at primary schools. In 2023, a large number of DSD speed displays "pro" were procured for targeted use on school routes. Primary schools in Aachen were able to proactively apply to the city to receive a speed display.

More than just a speed indicator

Thanks to the freely programmable text display of the "pro" version, customised messages can be shown on the City of Aachen displays. Thanks to the LTE connection, these texts and other settings can be easily transferred centrally to the DSDs by the Traffic Engineering department. There are time-dependent speed zones in front of schools in particular - the Timer function automatically adjusts the correct threshold values.

A particularly important tool for the city of Aachen: The recorded traffic data is transmitted wirelessly to the cloud. From here, precise analyses of speeding can be carried out. This allows the city to take targeted measures to make danger zones even safer.

Customised design for Aachen

A special detail of the Aachen DSD displays is the specially customised housing design. The displays were printed with the characters "Karla" and "Karlo". They were developed as part of the city's "FahrRad in Aachen" campaign and are now well-known personalities in the building blocks of the city of Aachen's school mobility concept. This individual design makes the adverts not only a useful, but also a likeable part of the cityscape.

Measurable success and expansion of the project

The introduction of the first DSD displays showed impressive results after just a short time: Around 85% of drivers adhered to the permitted 30 km/h. Due to this success, the city of Aachen decided to expand the project further in 2024 and purchased additional DSD displays. This will improve road safety even more across the board.

Targeted measures against speeders

The clear analyses of the recorded traffic data using the Police Report make it possible to quickly identify times with increased speeding. For the police and the city, the report provides an important objective basis for measures to increase road safety.

A complete success - for more safety on Aachen's roads!
